Chicago, circa 1952. This is a fascinating photograph to anyone interested in Chicago art. It was probably taken either in the Fairweather-Hardin Gallery on Ontario Street, or in Sally Fairweather's Evanston, IL home (that served as a gallery before they got the Ontario Street premises). This was likely at the opening of a Frances Chapin show—or possibly a group show. The people are (from left to right):
Maryette Charlton (photographer, and friend of Margo and her husband, painter George Buehr)
Jorie Shapiro (wife of Joe Shapiro)
Joe Shapiro (prominent Chicago art collector)
Margo Hoff
Vivian Chapin (Frances Chapin's [second] wife)
Christine Chapin (Frances Chapin's youngest daughter)
Francis Chapin (in the shadows), artist (to learn more about this artist, go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_Chapin)
(Note that tea is being served rather than drinks—this was probably in deference to Vivian Chapin, who was a Christian Scientist and teetotaler.)
(Many thanks to Mia Buehr for identifying and describing this photo.)
